Filipinos travelling to South Korea can now use their GCash mobile wallets for transactions with thousands of merchants.
This comes as Chinese fintech giant Ant Group announced today that it would help GCash, along with three other Asian e-wallets, expand into South Korea with its cross-border payment service Alipay+, Reuters reported.
Users of GCash, Malaysia’s Touch’n Go, Thailand’s TrueMoney and AlipayHK will be able to pay at over 12,000 merchants in South Korea using their local mobile payments apps.
The move comes as borders open up and travel restrictions continue to ease across Asia.
“With South Korea being one of the most popular destinations of Filipinos, we are delighted that our customers will be able to maximize their GCash app during their travels,” GCash president and CEO Martha Sazon said.
GCash, the country’s largest e-wallet, ended the first half of the year with 66 million registered users, with four out of five adults in the country having a GCash account.
It also has 5.2 million merchants and social sellers, and 339,000 cash-in and cash-out outlets.
