Who’s who in the Bongbong Marcos dinner meeting co-hosted by Metro Pacific and rumored investor Mitsui

Metro Pacific Investments led by bilyonaryo Manny V. Pangilinan co-hosted a dinner for President Bongbong Marcos with its rumored potential investment partner, Japanese sogo shosha Mitsui & Co.

Pangilinan led a handful of the country’s richest and most influential businessmen in the dinner including San Miguel Corp. president and CEO, Ramon S. Ang, Ayala Corp. chairman Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala and his wife Lizzie; Alliance Global CEO Kevin Tan; GT Capital vice chairman Alfred Ty; and Philippine Bank of Communications chairman Eric Ongpin Recto.

Pangilinan was accompanied by his protege PLDT president and CEO Al Panlilio, MPI CFO June Cheryl Cabal-Revilla,, and MPI head of government relations and public affairs Mike Toledo.

Marcos was with First Lady Liza Araneta- Marcos, former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Finance Secretary Benjamin Diokno, Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Balisacan, and Trade Secretary Alfredo Pascual.

During the dinner Wednesday (February 8), Marcos spoke about what he described as the “long-standing” partnership between Mitsui and the whole of Japan and the Philippines.

“The partnerships, I think, that we have developed with our friends here in Japan — with Mitsui, in particular — are now …[dormant]. We will have to revitalize them as they have been dormant to an effect, to a degree, during the lockdowns of the pandemic,” said Marcos.

“We look forward to the discussions that we will be having here for the next few days as we have great hopes that this will be a driver in the transformation of our economy,” said Marcos in his first formal affair during his five-day visit to Japan.

Bilyonaryo.com first reported about Mitsui’s plan to buy up to 20 percent of MPI. Mitsui neither confirmed nor denied the report. MPI said it has been in talks with “many interested investors” wanting to take a stake in the Salim-controlled firm but it has yet to enter into any definitive agreement.
