Jan 18, 2019(SPOT.ph) The Department of Transportation and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board on January 18 launched eSakay electric jeepneys, now plying the Makati-Mandulyong route. The initiative is part of the government's mordernization program of public utility vehicles, in which e-vehicles are gradually being rolled out around the Metro.

photo:A total of 15 eSakay jeep units, Meralco's e-vehicle venture, are set to service commuters going to Mandaluyong from Makati and vice versa. The e-jeeps will follow a route from Buendia MRT to Mandaluyong City Hall via Jupiter Street. The original route from Circuit Makati seems to have been replaced due to the the two-year closure of the Estrella-Pantaleon Bridge.
The jeepneys are designed with a side entrance and equipped with WiFi, GPS, CCTV cameras, and USB charging ports. The best part? You wouldn't have to worry about paying more than your usual jeepney ride because the basic fare is also priced at P9. An automated fare collection system will be utilized by the jeepneys.
"Aligned with the company’s goal of pioneering innovative energy solutions, Meralco supports sustainability in transportation via the company’s initiatives in helping create an effective and viable electric vehicle ecosystem," Meralco spokesperson Joe Zaldarriaga said in a report in March 2018.
eSakay Inc. is a registered subsidiary of the electric power company.
